Abstract
Kotabaru Regency is one of the districts in South Kalimantan that has natural resources potentially, for example, coal. Coal mining is easy to subside, and flooding can be disturbed mining activity, furthermore, it is necessary to carry out engineering geology investigations. The study aims to determine geological conditions, bearing capacity and obtain the amount of water discharge from the embankment seepage. The method of study to obtain the soil bearing capacity by analytical method (Terzaghi, 1943 and Schmertmann, 1978) and seepage discharge by finite element. The result of the study showed there has two geomorphological units, the Bekambit River Terrace Plain and the Bekambit Alluvial Plain. The stratigraphy consists of siltstone intercalation claystone, sandstone, coal, and also alluvial. Based on Cone Penetration Test data, bearing capacity that allowed with safety factor 3 and 3 meters of depth on a shallow foundation has several values ranging from 0.94 kN/m2 to 27 kN/m2, meanwhile based on laboratory data (unit weight, cohesion, and internal friction) bearing capacity for depth 4 m is 20 kN/m2 to 80 kN/m2 and for depth 9 m is 36 kN/m2 to 160 kN/m2. Seepage discharge of embankment at the reservoir 13 m has magnitude 4.5051 x 10-12 m3/s, and for the reservoir 14 m has debit 8.4711 x 10-12 m3/s.
