Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a chronic diseases which generally occurs in the elderly. There are many of elderly do not adherence to hypertension therapy both pharmacologically and nonpharmacologically. The factor that may affecting adherence is emotion. One of emotional intellegence dimension is self-awareness. Thus self-awareness is suspected had a relationship with adherence of hypertensive therapy. Objectives: To examine the relationship between self-awareness and adherence of hypertensive therapy among elderly patients with hypertensive. Method: This study was included in quantitative study with correlation analysis method and cross sectional designs. The subject was selected through simple random sampling consisted of 64 respondents. The data against self-awareness and adherence were taken using the Patient Competency Rating Scale (PCRS) and the Lifestyle Modification Adherence Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by Spearman test. Result: The results showed that the mean score of self-awareness was 74.66 from range score 25-100. The mean score of adherence hypertension therapy was 67.89 from range score 23-92. There was a significant correlation between selfawareness and adherence of hypertensive therapy among elderly hypertensive patients of Prolanis. The results obtained p value = 0.000 and r = 0,651. Conclusion: The elderly which has higher self-awareness would be more adherence against hypertension therapy.
