Abstract

This research is entitled “Male Superiority in Posdnicheff’s Perspective about Women Portrayed in Leo Tolstoy’s Novella: The Kreutzer Sonata”. The purpose of this research is to find out how is the male superiority in Posdnicheff’s perspective about women portrayed in Tolstoy’s The Kreutzer Sonata. This research uses qualitative method to analyze the data. The data were collected byusing close and comprehensive reading technique. The data were taken from the direct utterances expressed by main character named Posdnicheff in the research object, The Kreutzer Sonata novella, containing male superiority issues. This research applied character and characterization in objective approach and male chauvinism as the main theory by Mans bridge and Flaster to answer the research question.There are eight findings revealed in this research about Posdnicheff’s perspective on women that containing the male superiority. Those findings are divided then into three phases: Posdnicheff’s perspective about women during his adolescence, Posdnicheff’s perspective about women before his marriage, and Posdnicheff’s perspective about women during post-adolescence period. The first phase only has one finding; women are the prostitute. The second phase has five findings; women should be pure in love and virgin, women’s body is the most important over everything, women are traded goods, women are the only object of desire, and women’s life is only about men. While the third phase has two findings; women always seek for love and women are the sources of problem. The result of the research showed that all the form of male superiority within Posdnicheff’s perspective in everytime he describes and assesses women began when he was sixteen years old, and still continued until his adulthood. Furthermore, all of the superiority that is done by Posdnicheff towards women can be considered as the evidences of men’s oppression against women.
