Abstract

This research entitled The Doctor’s depression and Suicide in Marquez’s Leaf Storm focuses on analyzing the Doctor’s depression and suicide. The field of this research is psychology in literature which is the study to analyze the psychological aspect of a literary work’s character. Furthermore, the research dissects and discusses what are the causes of the Doctor’s depression and how suicide is become his decision. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data are taken from a novella entitled Leaf storm written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The data are analyzed by using the psychology in literature theory and supported by depression, suicide and absurdism theory. The result of this research finds that there are three notions which trigger the Doctor character’s depression and suicide. They are; the thwarted belongingness, the loss of important things, and the absurdism in the Doctor’s life. After facing so many struggles and depression intervention, the Doctor decided to take his own life.
