Abstract

This study examines the determinants of student consumption behavior related to the use of Shopee PayLater, a pay-later service that has become increasingly popular among students due to its convenience and flexible payment features. Nevertheless, uncontrolled utilization of this service may foster consumptive tendencies and elevate financial risks, as indicated by the rising non-performing loan (NPL) rate reported by the OJK, which reached 9.7% in 2023. The research surveyed 100 students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Unversitas Jenderal Soedirman and employed a quantitative approach using regression analysis to investigate how financial literacy, lifestyle, self control, and allowance levels shape their consumption behavior. The results show that the four variables together significantly influence students’ consumption behavior when using Shopee PayLater, with the model explaining 60% of the variation. Financial literacy is not significant, meaning that knowing about finance does not stop students from impulsive buying when faced with promotions or social pressure. Lifestyle is the strongest factor students who follow trends and have hedonistic habits tend to spend more. Self-control has a negative and significant effect, suggesting that discounts and peer influence are stronger than students’ ability to regulate themselves. Pocket money shows a positive and significant effect, indicating that students with more allowance are more likely to make purchases, including through Shopee PayLater. Overall, the study demonstrates that student consumption behavior is shaped not only by financial knowledge but more substantially by lifestyle patterns, social influences, emotional impulses, and economic capacity. These results are expected to provide a foundation for students to practice more prudent financial management and for universities to strengthen educational initiatives related to financial literacy and consumption control.
