Abstract

This research aims to analyse the dubbing techniques used to translate the flouting maxims of quantity and the accuracy of its translation in the movie Lightyear (2022). This research is a descriptive qualitative research based on Cooperative Principles by Grice (1975), translation technique theory by Molina and Albir (2002), and accuracy assessment model by Nababan et al. (2012). The data used were utterances that flouted the maxim of quantity uttered by the main characters in the movie Lightyear (2022) along with questionnaires containing feedback from three raters used to support the analysis of translation accuracy. The results identified 31 data in the form of utterances that flouted the maxim of quantity. There were 13 of the 18 techniques used, with the majority of data using the modulation technique (7), followed by literal translation (7), amplification (3), established equivalent (3), adaptation (3), calque (1), borrowing (1), linguistic amplification (1), reduction (1), description (1), linguistic compression (1), transposition (1), and omission (1). Furthermore, 29 data were found to be accurate, while the remaining 2 data were found to be less accurate. Therefore, the implementation of modulation techniques is used to change the perspective to align with the context and tone, thereby contributing to the accuracy of utterances that flout the maxim of quantity in the movie Lightyear (2022).
