Abstract

This study aimed to explore an English teacher’s perception of using YouTube videos as a learning medium to teach vocabulary to young learners, specifically in a school with inadequate teaching facilities. Mastery of English vocabulary was fundamental for young learners as a foundation for language acquisition; however, conventional textbook-centered instruction often proved insufficient to sustain student’s interest in under-resourced school contexts. This qualitative study employed a narrative inquiry approach to explore the teacher’s lived experiences and personal stories in navigating both the benefits and challenges of integrating YouTube into classroom instruction. The participant was an English teacher at SDN 2 Rejasari, selected through purposive sampling, who had direct experience integrating digital media into the lessons despite having only one LCD projector and unstable internet access. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations and were analyzed thematically to uncover the teacher’s perceptions, the perceived benefits of YouTube, and the strategies the teacher used to address instructional and infrastructural constraints. The findings revealed that the teacher perceived YouTube as a highly beneficial tool that supported vocabulary comprehension through multimodal input combining visual and auditory elements. The use of YouTube videos increased student engagement and motivation, transforming a previously passive classroom atmosphere into a more interactive learning setting. Despite these advantages, several challenges were identified, including inadequate teaching facilities, unstable internet connectivity, and varying levels of student understanding. To address these issues, the teacher employed adaptive strategies such as pre-downloading videos, pausing the videos for clarification, and providing scaffolding to assist students in understanding the content. Therefore, this study suggested that the integration of free digital platforms such as YouTube could help minimize instructional limitations in schools with inadequate facilities, provided that teachers applied professional judgment in selecting content aligned with students’ needs and curriculum objectives. The study concluded that YouTube videos served as a supportive learning medium for teaching vocabulary to young learners.
