Abstract

Identity is not a singular or fixed construct; rather, it is a complex and dynamic assemblage of intersecting social categories that collectively shape an individual's lived experience. This is particularly evident in the experiences of queer individuals whose identities are often constituted by multiple and overlapping axes of marginalization. Drawing on Kimberlé Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality, which posits that the simultaneous entanglement of race, gender, sexuality, and other social categories produces unique and compounded forms of oppression that cannot be understood in isolation, this study examines how the convergence of Ellie Chu's marginalized identities—as a queer Chinese immigrant woman, non-believer, and daughter of a low-income family navigating a conservative small-town environment—shapes her queer experience in Alice Wu's The Half of It (2020). This study aims to identify and analyze how the intersection of Ellie's marginalized identities produces a compounded queer experience that cannot be adequately understood through any single identity category alone. Employing a qualitative approach through content analysis, this study examines the film's narrative and visual elements to trace how Ellie's intersecting identities manifest in her social relationships, emotional journey, and position within the community. The findings reveal that Ellie's intersecting marginalized identities significantly intensify the adversity of her queer experience, particularly in contrast to Aster Flores, whose comparatively privileged social positioning affords her a markedly different experience. These findings affirm that identity plays a constitutive role in shaping individual experience, and that reducing a person's lived reality to a single identity category risks profound misrepresentation.
