Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the implementation of picture series in teaching speaking in the second year students of SMP IT Bina Insan Kamil Sidareja in the Academic Year of 2021/2022, to describe the problems faced by the teacher in implementing the picture series to speak English, and to describe the students’ perception on the implementation of picture series in their speaking class. The research was designed as an explorative qualitative study. The researcher used VIII C as sample. The researcher collected the data using observation, questionnaire, documentation, and interview. The data are analyzed by doing data reduction, data display, and verification. The research results showed that in the implementation of picture series in teaching speaking the teacher has three roles as prompter, participant, and feedback provider. The implementation of this media was adapted to three teaching activities in teaching speaking. The use of this media also showed positive effect on the students’ achievement where most of the students improved their speaking skill. This result was supported with the questionnaire data. The questionnaire revealed that 84.5% students agreed that this media is useful for their speaking competence. In conclusion, using picture series in teaching speaking can be an alternative for the teacher to improve the students' speaking competence of the second year students of SMP IT Bina Insan Kamil Sidareja. The researcher suggests English teacher to use media in teaching such as picture series to attract the students' interest in learning English.
