Abstract

The background of the research was based on the problem that many teachers still depend on the text book to teach students in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. The objectives of this study are (1) to find out the way story mapping Technique is used by eight grade students of SMP N 3 Purwokerto, (2) to know the students’ responses toward use of story mapping technique in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text and (3) to find out students’ problems in the use of story mapping technique in learning reading comprehension of narrative text. The method of the research was descriptive qualitative study. Data were obtained through observation, students’ questionnaire, and students’ interview. The data from those techniques were written in the form of detail description and charts. In analyzing the data, researcher selected and displayed the data related to the research objectives. The data were presented through descriptive explanation. The results of this research are (1) the use of story map as a media in teaching reading narrative text was successfully used by the teacher in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. (2) students were interested to use story map as a media to teach reading comprehension of narrative text with the average of students’ test score is 80. (3) students find two problems in reading comprehension of narrative text which are; lack of vocabulary; and unable to understand the content of the text. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that story mapping technique was successfully used and it helped the students in many aspects of reading. Furthermore, students are interested in learning narrative text by using this media.
