Abstract

This study aims to find out the meaning of power in the three selected symbols in the film entitled Raya and The Last Dragon (2021). The data from this study are the three selected symbols such as the dragon, the gem, and the character of Raya, each of which has a true meaning in the form of power. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. To answer research questions and analyze the meaning of the power from the three objects, the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes is applied. As this study uses film as an object, so the film theory of Blain Brown (2012) is also used. The analysis of this research uses the theory of Signification Order from Barthes to find out the general and specific meaning of each symbol. According to the results of the study, there is a literal meaning attached to the object, namely the meaning of power. Then, the meaning of power by the three objects is elaborated further based on their existence and function in the movie. The Dragon symbol in the movie is found to mean the power of protection toward humans. The Gem symbol indicates the power of belief. Lastly, the character of Raya, signifies the meaning of the power of unity. The three meanings of the power of each object achieve prosperity, which is shown in Kumandra. Kumandra is the central land of the union of 5 separate kingdoms, namely Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail. The meaning of the power by the three objects aims to achieve a prosperity which can reunite the five separated lands and destroy the Drunn, an evil plague.
