Abstract

Istiqomah, Indana Zulfa. 2022. The Correlational Studyon Students’ Knowledge of Past Tenses and English Recount Text of Writing Skill at SMA Negeri 1 Pemalang in Academic Year 2022/2023. Thesis. Puwokerto: English Education Study Program, Department of Language Education, Faculty of Humanities, Jenderal Soedirman University. Supervisor 1 : Slamet Riyadi, S.S., M.Pd., Supervisor 2 : Erna Wardani, S.S., M.Hum., Examiner : Muhammad Ahsanu, S.Pd., M.Sc., M.Hum., Ph.D. This correlational research is aimed to determine the mastery level of students’ knowledge of past tenses and writing skills in recount text and to find its correlation between the two variables. The analysis uses an independent variable of students’ knowledge of past tenses andthe dependent variable of students’ writing skills in recount text. The sample of this research is 31 students of XI BB at SMA Negeri 1 Pemalang. Total sampling was used in this research. The data on students’ knowledge levels of past tenses were collected using multiple choice items focused on simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past perfect continuous tense. While the writing test is focused on recount text. The statistical method used was simple regression analysis using SPSS 26. The result showed that the XI BB of SMA Negeri 1 Pemalang students’ past tenses knowledge is fairly good. It was revealed on the mean score of the tenses test that is 74. The XI BB of SMA Negeri 1 Pemalang students’ writing skill in recount text is good. It was shown on the mean score of the writing test that is 80. These variables showed a positive correlation by 56,6% of students’ knowledge of past tenses affected their writing skill in recount text. The recommendation for students and teacher are that this result is hoped to be a motivation in English learning and give teachers insight to increase their English teaching quality by improving the teaching technique.
