Abstract

This research is entitled A Semiotic Analysis on the Meaning of Denotation and Connotation on the Issue of Feminism in the Little Women Movie. This research aims to analyze the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth in the Little Women (2019) movie. The research used the theory of semiotics by Roland Barthes (1986) and the theory of liberal feminism by Tong and Botts (2018). The qualitative descriptive method was used to answer the research questions. Verbal and non-verbal signs in the Little Women (2019) movie scene, which contain liberal feminism, were selected using purposive sampling. The data from this research, I took 15 scenes from the Little Women (2019) movie, which contain the issue of liberal feminism. The results of this research explain the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth, focusing only on verbal and non-verbal signs in each scene in the movie. First, denotation discusses the literal meaning that has been universally agreed upon. Second, connotation discusses the second meaning or subjective meaning. In the analysis of connotative meaning, the explanation is related to the theory of liberal feminism by Tong and Botts (2018). Third, myth discusses the connotative meaning that dominates society and is considered normal in everyday life. In the analysis of myth, the Little Women (2019) movie presents a myth about society’s view of women, which is still associated with old traditions regarding the assumption that women are only suitable to be in the household environment and the negative perceptions of women who choose a career rather than marriage. Besides that, the movie also presents a myth about women who have a loving and gentle personality.
