Abstract

This research elaborates more about the four types of discrimination that happens in Snowpiercer (2013). The aim of this study is to know how the discrimination illustrated in Snowpiercer (2013). This research applied New Criticism theory with the four types of discrimination by Mary E. Kite and Bernand E. Whitley using a descriptive qualitative method. First, Interpersonal discrimination happened when a character named Tanya got beaten because she wanted to prevent her son from being taken by the first class passenger. The oppression by the superiors to the lone inferior used physical violance so they gain benefit for them. Second, Organizational discrimination occured when the rebels from tail wagon passenger tasted the slight freedom experienced by the first wagon passenger. The provitable policies where the inferiors suffered from the lack of life support to save the supply only for the superiors while the superiors received everything they need. Third, Institutional discrimination experienced by a character named Andrew suffered his arm being cut off because of committing a light crime. The practices of rules of the inferior who committed a light crime did not suit with the punishment. It is done as an example for the other inferiors in order to keep them in place. Fourth, Cultural discrimination occured when a rebel was mocked by a little girl since their appearance was awful. It shows that minority could be discriminated through ideology that the majority created in order to oppress the minority. Therefore, the four types of discrimination occur in Snowpiercer (2013) through discriminating action are suffered by the tail wagon passengers from first wagon passenger. The findings show that the four types of discrimination illustrated in Snowpiercer (2013) through scenes is an information which is acceptable and provides knowledge for the readers. In conclusion, the four types of discrimination in Snowpiercer (2013) shows that the inferiors suffered many kinds of oppression conducted by the superiors. The inferiors experienced physical violance, inability to protect their children, punishments by losing parts of their body, and suffered from mentally abused by the superiors. All of the discrimination action done in order to re-create a hierarchy in the middle of catastrophe.
