Abstract

This study is aimed to know the readability level of recount, descriptive, report, and exposition texts that exist in English textbook entitled ‘Buku Interaktif Active English, English for Senior High School Students’ for grade X. This study also searched another point view from students as the user of the textbook. Those four genres of reading text were chosen because the tenth-grade students in one of Senior High Schools in Kebumen felt that those genres were difficult to understand and they shared that the texts provided in the textbook are quite long and the sentences are complex. Relating to those problems, the researcher conducted this study. This study employed descriptive quantitative method. The measurement tool for calculating readability level was Miyazaki EFL Readability Index Formula and questionnaire for obtaining students’ perceptions. The questionnaire was distributed to 34 tenth-grade students. The findings show that the readability level of recount, descriptive, report, and exposition texts are in ‘Difficult’ level for tenth-grade students with a score of 45.320. It is similar with students’ perceptions that those texts are in ‘Difficult’ level.
