Abstract

Supervisor 1: Dr. Lynda Susana Widya A F, S.S., M.Hum., Supervisor 2: Eni Nur Aeni, S.S., M.A., External Examiner: Rizki Februansyah, S.S., M.A., Secretary: Tri Murniati, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D. This research is entitled "The Found-Family Trope to Counter Dysfunctional Family in Superhero Movies". The purpose of this research is to show the pattern of dysfunctional family portrayal followed by found-family trope portrayal in superhero movies. The exact recurring pattern is interesting to analyze as it parallels the phenomena in the real world. The findings from this research were analyzed using qualitative methods. Two objects of movies are used in this research, which are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Shazam!. The primary theoretical frameworks used in examining the topics of this research are dysfunctional family, found-family trope, and film theory. The results of this study are based on theory of dysfunctional family by Al-Ubaidi (2017), found-family trope and film theory by some sources. The findings indicated a portrayal of mainly Chronic Conflict Family as a type of dysfunctional family and Abusive Parent as the cause of dysfunctional family; meanwhile, the findings of found-family trope portrayals are The Ragtag Crew and Band of Misfits. The way to counter dysfunctional family with found-family trope is by the integrated relation of narrative, genre, and characters. The researcher was able to conclude that the pattern of dysfunctional family and found-family trope in superhero movies is the result of genre itself.
