Abstract

The Dictator (2012) is a film by Larry Charles that tells the story of Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen, a dictator from the fictional nation of Wadiya who experiences betrayal from his subordinates and tries to take back his power while he survives in New York City. This study aims to explore the issue of the specific type of dictatorial leadership of an Admiral General Aladeen. In this study, the researcher used the dictatorship theory of Barbara B. Geddes and Jeroen Van den Bosch and used the theory of character analysis, characterization, and film elements as supporting theories. This research used a qualitative descriptive method and data are collected in the form of dialogue (text) and images (visual). The results of the study show that Admiral General Aladeen can be categorized as a personalist dictator leader. There are 3 types of aspects that characterize the leadership of a personalist dictator, namely the one-man rule, winning coalition, and informal rule. Admiral General Aladeen displays the characteristics of a personalist dictator which can be seen from the way he treats his subordinates in government, the people of the Wadiya country, and also the way he behaves when he survives in New York City.
