Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the visual and verbal modes expressed by Instagram account posts about mental health issues and to describe how the visual and verbal modes of images on Instagram posts contribute to the dissemination of Representational Meanings in each poster. The researcher used qualitative methods in analyzing the data in this research. The data of this research were obtained from @gemmacorrell's Instagram account posts in the form of posters about mental problems. In analyzing the data, this research uses the Multimodal Discourse Analysis theory proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2020). Based on this theory, the results of this research show that the selected posters contain visual and verbal elements. The visual elements are shown by the depiction of participants in the posters, while the verbal elements are shown by the text written in the posters. The researcher also found narrative and conceptual structures that build representative meaning for the audience. The narrative structures are expressed by the action and reactional process contained in the poster. While the conceptual structures are expressed by the Carrier and the Symbolic Attribute. Moreover, visual and verbal elements correlate with each other to convey how anxiety disorders occur even in events that are considered normal.
