Abstract

This study investigates the use of sentence structures in essay writing by 4th emester English education students at Jenderal Soedirman University during the 2023/2024 academic year. This study is a qualitative research. The data of this study are students’ documentation of their essay work and questionnaire. The object of this research is to identify what sentences made by 4th semester students of English education at Jenderal Soedirman University in the academic year of 2023/2024 and their perceptions on types of senteneces. In this research, the researcher finds some students' strengths in basic sentence construction and highlights areas for improvement, such as incorporating more complex sentences, enhancing grammatical accuracy, and expanding vocabulary. The analysis reveals the students' awareness of the importance of varied sentence structures for readability and engagement, alongside the challenges of maintaining coherence and clarity. Data from a 15-question questionnaire show students' perspectives on sentence variety, emphasizing the need for careful revising, experimentation, and continuous improvement. The findings underscore the ongoing process of balancing simplicity with complexity to produce clear and engaging essays.
