Abstract
This research entitled “The Depiction of Intergenerational Trauma in Howard's Encanto (2021)” aims to find out the depiction of the intergenerational trauma and its effects in a multigenerational family. It explains how intergenerational trauma can greatly affect the physical and psychological state of each generation in a family. This research uses psychological approach to find the form of influence of intergenerational trauma on the psycho-social development of each generation, trauma theory is used to analyze the causes of intergenerational trauma and its impact on each individual, and the concept of intergenerational trauma is used to support the analysis results that show the mechanism of intergenerational trauma and its influence in this film. The researcher used a qualitative method which is focus on narrative/document study in analyzing the data. The main data is taken from the film script and cinematography of Encanto movie. The results of this study show that there is a form of intergenerational trauma mechanism through authoritarian parenting patterns in Alma Madrigal's character, such as controlling, not validating children's feelings, and one-way communication. Also, the research shows the impact of intergenerational trauma on each generation such as social withdrawal, identity foreclosure, fear of failure, and identity crisis.
