Abstract

This research aims to analyze types of implicature and the function of context in a song. The study is grounded in H.P. Grice's theory of implicature, which distinguishes between conventional and conversational implicature, further divided into generalized and particularized types. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. To address the research questions, the researcher repeatedly watched the film and listened to each soundtrack therein to analyze their implicature types and song contexts. The findings indicate that particularized conversational implicature was more prevalent, totaling 21 instances, while generalized conversational implicature was less frequent, totaling 4 instances. Context in the songs is crucial as it relates to the background in which the songs are sung. Understanding the context helps in comprehending the intended meaning behind the lyrics, as the context provides insight into the circumstances and cultural nuances that influence the songwriter's choice of words and phrases. This research contributes to the broader understanding of how implicature functions in musical compositions, offering insights into the subtle ways in which songwriters convey deeper meanings beyond the literal interpretation of their lyrics. By highlighting the importance of context, the study underscores the complexity of interpreting songs and the need for a nuanced approach to analyzing musical texts.
