Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the types of verbal humour, subtitling strategies as well as the readability aspect of the subtitle of verbal humour in Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. The analysis is conducted by using the theory of types of verbal humour by Hay (1995: 65), theory of subtitling strategies by Gottlieb (1992: 166) and theory of translation readability proposed by Nababan (2012: 45). The data of this research are 38 data of verbal humour from Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn movie. In order to answer the research questions, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method and total sampling. The result of questionnaires that are acquired from the raters is also taken into consideration in conducting this research. The result of this research shows that there are only 6 types of verbal humour that are found in all the data, in which the insult type dominates with a total of 45% verbal humour, followed by self-deprecation (18%), vulgarity (15%), irony (13%), anecdote (6%), and observational (3%). Moreover, the subtitling strategies that are used are only 6 strategies. The strategies consist of condensation (6%), deletion (13%), expansion (13%), imitation (6%), paraphrase (44%), and transfer (18%). The most used strategies is paraphrase which is used to change the structure or vocabulary with the similar meaning that can be more understood in the target language. At last, the readability aspect of the data is predominantly readable which has a total 89% of verbal humour, and 11% belong to less readable. Thus, the subtitle of verbal humour in Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn are generally easy to understand, so that it can transfer the meaning and context of verbal humour in this movie. It is proved by the use of subtitling strategies that are implemented to each category of verbal humour and result in the high level of readability in Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emacipation of One Harley Quinn.
