Abstract

This research is entitled A Critical Discourse Analysis in Al Jazeera and CNN Online News about Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s Death. This research aims to analyze discursive strategies differences and ideology depiction in Al Jazeera and CNN news about journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s death. The theory applied in conducting this research is discursive strategies in Wodak and Meyer (2016). The research is conducted using qualitative descriptive method. The data for this research are from Al Jazeera news entitled Shireen Abu Akleh: Al Jazeera reporter killed by Israeli forces and CNN news entitled Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh shot dead while covering Israeli military operation in West Bank. The result of this research is that there are 131 discursive strategies on Al Jazeera. There are 66 nominations, 11 predications, 8 argumentations, 38 perspectivations, and 8 intensifications. On CNN, there are 124 discursive strategies. There are 62 nominations, 10 predications, 9 argumentations, 36 perspectivations, and 7 intensifications and mitigations. On Al Jazeera, there are 8 intensifications which intensify Israel’s bad act in killing Shireen Abu Akleh. Meanwhile, CNN uses 5 intensifications and 2 mitigations. The similar quantity on Al Jazeera and CNN news in discursive strategies aspect shows that every media tries to be objective and professional. On Al Jazeera, its ideology tends to support Palestinians in Abu Akleh’s death. Meanwhile, CNN tends to support Israel. As a suggestion, Al Jazeera and CNN journalists should be objective in making news, and online news readers should be aware of all the media they read to avoid misinformation.
