Abstract

The final report, “Translating Lily Rothman’s ‘After the Bomb’ Time’s Article (English to Indonesian)”, was completed during job training from August 18th to September 21st, 2022. The article was selected for translation due to its relevance in depicting Japan’s historical experiences with atomic bombings and its significant life and moral messages. Translating this piece aims to convey crucial insights and lessons from survivors to readers and future generations. The purpose of the job training is to translate the ‘After the Bomb’ Time’s article from English to Indonesian and to ensure that its meanings and messages are effectively conveyed. This includes explaining the implementation of the job training, detailing the translation process, and addressing the problems encountered and their solutions, to provide readers with a deeper understanding in the Indonesian language. The type of translation used to translate the article is idiomatic translation. While translating the article, there are four stages process of translation that were used, including analysis, transfer, restructuring, evaluation and revision. Additionally, various translation techniques were applied, they are adaptation, borrowing, calque, compensation, literal translation, modulation, transposition. When doing something, it certainly cannot be separated from obstacles. During the translation process, several obstacles are encountered, such as a lack of vocabulary, difficulty understanding unfamiliar words, and the challenge of understanding nuanced meanings from sentences. To overcome those obstacles, multi-step approach is done, such as, using online dictionaries, thesauruses, and language learning apps to build vocabulary, setting aside difficult sentences for later review, and consulting supervisors for advice and feedback.
