Abstract
This research is delivered to identify the slang types used in the subtitle of Fury (2014), the translation techniques of the slang words, and the acceptability rate of its translation. This research is conducted using qualitative methods. The data of this research are slang utterances of the characters and its translation in the subtitle of the movie Fury (2014). Furthermore, this research utilizes inputs from expert raters through a questionnaire on the acceptability rate of the slang words translation as the data. The result of slang types classification shows flippant slang as the most frequent slang from the movie with 41 samples (46.06%), followed by fresh and creative slang with 31 samples (34.83%), imitative with 10 samples (11.23%), acronym with 4 samples (4.49%), and clipping with 3 samples (3.37%). Moreover, established equivalent becomes the most frequently used translation technique with 44 samples (49.43%), followed by generalization with 13 samples (14.60%), linguistic compression with 7 samples (7.86%), variation with 7 samples (7.86%), particularization with 6 samples (6.74%), amplification with 4 samples (4.49%), description with 4 samples (4.49%), borrowing with 2 samples (2.24%), discursive creation with 1 sample (1.12%), and transposition with 1 sample (1.12%). The acceptability rate of the slang words translation shows that out of 89 total samples, 75 (84.3%) samples are considered to be acceptable and 14 (15.7%) samples are considered to be less acceptable. Out of all slang word samples, the translator mostly uses the established equivalent and generalization translation technique to deliver the meanings using familiar words in the target language. This is also supported by the high number of acceptability slang words translation from the assessment. Therefore, the translation of slang words in the subtitle of Fury (2014) is mostly acceptable.
