Abstract

A practice of combining two or more languages in a single speech is known as code-mixing. This research focuses on the use of code-mixing that occurred in vocational high schools in Banyumas, specifically at SMK Maarif NU 2 Ajibarang. The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds of code-mixing implemented by teacher, the reasons, and some factors that influenced the teacher to implement code-mixing in English class. Hoffman's theory is used in this research to determine the types, as well as Bhatia and Ritchie’s theory to find the reasons and factors of code-mixing. To determine the research participants, the researcher used a purposive sampling technique. The researcher carried out observation, interview, and documents to collect the data. The researcher observed and recorded the entire teaching process, interviewed the research participant, transcribed the utterances, classified and organized the data, grouped data, and the last was to analyze the data. Based on the data analysis, the result of the research shows that there are three types of code-mixing namely Intra-Lexical, Intra-Sentential, and the type of ode mixing that involves a change in Pronunciation. To sum up, Intra-Sentential type is the major type that can be found from the data and the code mixing that involves a change in pronunciation is the type that occurs least frequently. Meanwhile, the reasons of the participants in using code-mixing found in this study are to refer to certain topics, repetition used for clarification, and the intentions of clarify speech content to the interlocutor. Furthermore, the factors that influence the teacher to use code-mixing are her role as a teacher and her relationship with the students, as well as situational factors such as the topic and setting of their conversation.
