Abstract

Books are important materials that have several contents, and one of which is dialogue. One feature of dialogue is preference organization. However, researchers in Indonesia rarely study about preference organization in the textbooks. Therefore, the researcher decided to analyze how preference organization was presented in the English textbook entitled Pathway to English. The objectives of this research are: 1) identify the frequencies of preferred and dispreferred responses in the dialogues of English textbook entitled Pathway to English, 2) identify the linguistic cues that influence the occurrence of preferred and dispreferred responses in the dialogues of English textbook entitled Pathway to English, 3) identify the impact of sequence organization on the occurrence of preferred and dispreferred responses in the dialogue of English textbook entitled Pathway to English. This research used a qualitative method with content analysis approach. For data collection, the researcher used documentation techniques obtained from the English textbook entitled Pathway to English. The results of the research showed that: 1) There were 35 preference organization responses in the book's dialogues, divided into 30 preferred responses and 5 dispreferred responses, 2) The linguistic cues that contributed to the occurrence of preferred responses were 12 agreements and 14 expected answers, and 4 acceptances, while the linguistic cues that contributed to the occurrence of dispreferred responses were 2 refusal, 1 admission and 2 unexpected answers, 3) In addition, sequence organization found 4 preferred and 1 dispreferred response after pre-sequence, 25 preferred responses and 4 dispreferred responses after insert-sequence and 1 preferred response after post-sequence. This research concluded that preferred responses were higher than dispreferred responses with agreement, expected answers and insert-sequences being the main factors contributing to the preferred responses. The researcher hopes that this research will encourage future researchers to explore more the factors that contribute to the selection of responses.
