Abstract

This research examines the translation procedures and accuracy of conative functions in Rhaenyra Targaryen’s utterances in House of the Dragon Season 2. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes how conative functions are translated and evaluates the impact of these choices on accuracy. Based on Jakobson’s (1995) concept of conative function, the study identifies seven types of conative functions, with activational vocative (42.03%) and affirmative imperative (31.88%) appearing most frequently. These dominant forms reflect the character’s role as a ruler in the series. Using Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) translation procedures, the study identifies four strategies employed, with literal translation (60.87%) being the most frequently used procedure. This indicates that the source language often contains expressions that can be directly translated to the target language. The accuracy of the translations, assessed using Nababan’s (2012) model, reveals a high accuracy rate of 88.41%, with most utterances maintaining their imperative or vocative meaning. A few received lower ratings due to omissions of parts of utterances or shifts in meaning. These findings highlight the importance of accurately preserving conative functions in audiovisual translation to ensure the speaker’s intent is conveyed to the target audience.
