Abstract
This research examines how individuals with the autism spectrum experience love, as depicted in the Australian documentary series Love on the Spectrum (2019). Drawing on Dr. Koegel’s theories of priming, teaching listening, and exploiting strengths, and Freud’s psychoanalytic concepts of the id, ego, and superego, the study examines the social and development of four characters: Michael, Kelvin, Andrew, and Maddi. The findings reveal that Dr. Koegel strategies effectively help individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) navigate social interactions and build romantic relationships. Priming prepares them for social situations, teaching listening enhances conversational skills, and exploiting strengths allows them to connect with others effectively. Freud’s theory further explains their innate desires (id), emotional regulation (ego), and moral awareness (superego) in their pursuit of love. The study concludes that individuals with ASD, with proper support and guidance, can form meaningful romantic relationships, emphasizing that love is universal and accessible to all. Recommendations for future research include exploring the series through psychological, sociological, and cultural lenses to deepen understanding of autism and relationships.
