Abstract

This study identifies and analyzes the use of interjections in the So Childish Webtoon comic, focusing on their classification and the emotional states they reflect. The research adopted a qualitative approach and examined 71 episodes, concentrating on Standard English transcriptions adapted from African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The analysis employed Ameka’s (2006) classification of interjections alongside Jovanović’s (2004) framework for emotional categorization. The results indicate that emotive interjections emerged as the most dominant category, accounting for 35.63% of all instances. Furthermore, the emotional state of desire for attention appeared most frequently in the data, with 17.24%. This study contributes to pragmatics research by proposing a new categorization of emotional states expressed through interjections, thereby expanding the scope of interjectional meaning as outlined in Jovanović’s framework. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that interjections function as an effective linguistic tool for conveying emotional states, particularly within informal and spontaneous dialogue.
