Abstract
This research identifies the types of legal terms, translation techniques, and translation accuracy of legal terms that appeared in the first two episodes of Netflix's Suits, Season 1. This research was based on Alcaraz & Hughes' theory of legal term classification (2002), Harvey's theory of legal translation techniques (2000), and Nababan et al.'s theory of translation quality assessment (2012). This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing a questionnaire and feedback from raters for data collection and analysis. The analysis results showed that there were 114 legal terms categorized into three classifications. The most frequent classification was purely technical terms (56), followed by semi technical terms (31), and finally, everyday vocabulary frequently found in legal text (27). Meanwhile, legal translation techniques were categorized into four, with the most used technique being functional equivalence (69), followed by formal equivalence (37), transcription (8), and descriptive (0). In terms of accuracy, among the total 114 data analyzed, 79 data were considered accurate, 34 data were less accurate, and 1 data was considered inaccurate. This finding shows that the translation of legal terms in the Netflix series Suits is considered accurate with the use of proper techniques and also an understanding of legal terms in the SL and TL. This shows that the application of the right technique is able to maintain clarity and comprehensibility of meaning despite various technical constraints.
