Abstract

Character education has become one of the main issues in educational field. The national education goal of Indonesia also mentions the importance of forming students’ character at school. Teacher as a person who directly interacts with the students is the key factor in forming students’ character in class. This research aims to investigate the strategies that the teacher used in teaching character education to the students, its implementation, and problems faced when implementing these strategies. This study used qualitative method with a case study approach. The subject of this study is the teacher at SMP Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Purwokerto. This research used a convenience sampling technique. The data were collected through observation, interview, and document analysis. The data were analyzed through thematic data analysis. The results of this study show that: (1) The teacher at SMP Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Purwokerto used some strategies in teaching character education to the students: habituation, discovery learning, cooperative learning, blended learning, discussion, interview and literation; (2) In implementing the strategies, the teacher became the role model, grouped, commanded the students, as well as integrated learning; (3) Some problems faced by the teacher when implementing the strategies are the students’ decreasing learning norm, and attitudes, the effect of digital era and conduciveness. In conclusion, the implementation of strategies used by the teacher to teach character education at SMP Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Purwokerto was successful to support students’ character development. The various strategies and activities that was done by the teacher in implementing character education provided students to develop their character.
