Abstract

English as foreign language is one of the subjects to master in the curriculum. In mastering English skills, the students are required to understand various vocabularies so that can make they more easily to express their thought in writing process. This research is addressed to answer the researcher questions: What are the teachers' perceptions on teaching descriptive text for writing and how does the teacher teach descriptive text for writing. This research used narrative inquiry. The participants of the research are two English teachers from SMP N 8 Purwokerto who involved in teaching writing descriptive text. The data of this research were collected from the teachers by doing interview. The data collected from interview were analyzed by looking the same themes and patterns from both teachers in teaching descriptive text. The result of the study in SMP N 8 Purwokerto showed that (1) Learning writing descriptive text is very important for the students. In developing students’ writing, the teachers expected, the students to be able to generate what the ideas or what their thoughts properly. (2) The teachers used Problem Based Learning (PBL) method in teaching descriptive text and the teachers used printed material in explaining descriptive text. In conclusions using proper method in teaching descriptive text help the students in exploring various vocabularies and make the students more detail in generating ideas on writing descriptive text. The students’ motivation also plays an important role in the English mastery. By motivating the students, the teachers hoped the students can easily grasp the material delivered by the teachers.
