Abstract

This research attempted to tell the experiences of an English teacher about her experience in teaching online English classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The reasons for conducting this research are that an English teacher at SMP Negeri 4 Purwokerto experienced a sudden online teaching phenomenon when the Covid-19 pandemic spread throughout Indonesia. Such a situation caused the participant to be unable to teach face-to-face and had to move to using online methods. However, even though learning cannot run as usual, as an English teacher, the participant must rack her brains to keep the teaching and learning going well and effectively. Using narrative inquiry as the research methodology, which is a qualitative method, this research attempted to dive into the experiences of an English teacher in teaching online English classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interview was conducted to explore the story of a participant. Thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the data findings resulted in several themes (1) Teaching activities, (2) Online teaching process, (3) Teaching assessment, and (4) Online teaching challenges. The findings of this study indicate that participants started the online teaching with confusion, but over time adapted well. The English teacher adjusted the teaching materials to fit the online method. Teacher focused on using videos as the teaching materials. Meanwhile, for the teaching methods, teacher applied blended methods to achieve efficiency and effectiveness of time. Then for the teaching media, the teacher used YouTube videos and images sourced from Google. Role playing methods were used for speaking skills and Google Forms for daily tests to assess the students. Conditioning students to join the class meeting on time was the biggest difficulties for the teacher. Other than that, the limitations of direct supervision from the teacher prevented her to manage the students.
