Abstract

The aim of this study are (1) to find out the implementation of TikTok media in improving students' speaking skills; (2) to determine the effectiveness of using TikTok as authentic material. TikTok is one of the effective authentic materials to improve students' speaking skills. TikTok is an application that provides video-based media. This research used a quasi experimental design involving 60 tenth grade student as samples from state senior high school in Purwokerto. The research instruments were test, observation and documentation. The results of this study showed that students' speaking skills after using TikTok, increased by 35.41% from the pre-test mean score of 58.53 to the post-test mean score of 79.26. Furthermore, it was found that the use of TikTok has an effect size of 1.504, which is a strong effect category, and the significance value in the independent sample t test was 0.000 <0.05. It means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, in observation and documentation, it was found that there are various activities that can be implemented in the use of TikTok as authentic material in learning speaking, such as: conducting discussion activities by interpreting information from authentic materials, eavesdropping activities, interactive activities such as role play conversations, and ensuring that TikTok authentic materials used as learning media are in line with learning objectives and relate to real life. It can be concluded that the use of TikTok as authentic material was effective in improving students' speaking skills. The researcher suggests teachers and students to use TikTok as a learning media for speaking. Other researchers can also use this research as a guideline for further research.
