Abstract
Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental part of learning English. However, many students still struggle with vocabulary due to the lack of effective learning tools. Vocabulary journals are a useful learning tool that helps students record, review, and understand new words more effectively. This research aims to: 1) Figure out the implementation of vocabulary journals as a learning tool on students’ vocabulary mastery. 2) Reveal the significant effect in implementing vocabulary journals as a learning tool on students’ vocabulary mastery. 3) Identify the benefits and challenges faced by the students in implementing vocabulary journals. The research uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The research population included all grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Sokaraja in the Academic Year of 2024/ 2025. The researcher took the research samples by using purposive sampling technique. The research samples consisted of 25 students from grade VIIA as the experimental group and 25 students from grade VIIB as the control group. The researcher collected the data through an observation checklist, tests, and questionnaire. The observation checklist showed that the students actively participated in classroom activities such as completing vocabulary journal sections, asking questions, and responding to the teacher’s instructions. The pre-test results showed that the average score of the experimental group was 54.56, while the control group was 54.32. After treatment, the post-test scores increased to 72.48 for the experimental group and 62.32 for the control group, with the significance value was 0.001 < 0.05. The questionnaire results also showed that 11 students (44%) strongly agree and 14 students (56%) agree with the statement “Vocabulary journals help me to enhance my vocabulary mastery.” However, 32% of students were still hard in finding word meanings, 36% in identifying synonyms and antonyms, and 28% in creating example sentences. In conclusion, vocabulary journals helped to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery by making learning more active and meaningful. Although some students faced a few difficulties, this learning tool was effective and can be used for in classroom settings to support vocabulary learning. English teachers are advised to use vocabulary journals in their teaching to help students practice vocabulary regularly.
